Happy New Year 2016!!! And More...

Hello there!!!

I have been completely inactive with regard to my blog for close to 6 months now. I would like to change that in the new year. First let me wish you all, a very Happy and Successful New Year 2016! I know you all will be busy writing your semester examinations, so wishing you all success in that as well. Every time I write a post, I usually want to post something useful. So this time around as well, I would like to give you something beneficial. The upcoming semester is going to be very short, especially, the final semester students are going to find themselves in a tight spot due to very limited time for their projects. In this regard, I would like to suggest one broad area of research that has some practical relevance.
Housing is an important requirement for any human being. However, in countries like India where a large section of the population cannot afford to build own homes, low cost affordable building materials will go a long way in enabling them to realise the dream of owning a house. According to one study by KPMG and NAREDCO, the housing shortage in India is six crore units and by 2022, India needs to develop 11 crore housing units which requires US$ 250-260 billion. You can access that study here. Thus, as budding Civil Engineers, the onus falls on us for developing low cost technologies and materials for housing. Thus, I suggest that you can put in your efforts in developing something really beneficial for the masses by researching low cost building materials. Being specialized in Geotechnical Engineering, I would suggest stabilized soil blocks as one area of research. The concept is not new but has a lot of potential for research and development. As a part of this initiative, I would like to guide you to a few resources for you to begin your project, if at all this is going to be your area of interest. You will definitely need code books for guiding you in your testing procedures. So here are two of them.

And this one here will definitely help you understand stabilized soils blocks and set you on your way in doing a good final year research project.

Hope the first post of the new year sets your thought process rolling and lands you on the right track for a very good future...

Ciou!!!

P.S.: If you do select this area for your final semester project, do share your views and experiences in the comments section.
