What's New in Regulation 2013 for Civil Engineering? - A Superficial Comparison

Hello everyone!
I had already posted about the new regulation that was recently released by Anna University. But then, I didn't find the time to check it out as much as I have done now.
This analysis is still very shallow as I haven't gone into the individual subject syllabi to look for changes, however, comparison at this level itself have revealed quite a few changes.

First of all, lets take a look at semester I of Reg - 2008, the last regulation released by Anna University, Chennai ( Not taking into account the Reg - 2010 released by the now defunct Anna University of Technology Chennai) and compare it with Reg - 2013. I've shown a pic of the syllabus of semester I of the two regulations side by side for the benefit of the readers.

The first thing that you notice is that the subject codes have been changed as I had mentioned in my earlier post regarding this. The new subject codes start with the the usual two letter for different subjects but the number series starts with a 6 instead of the earlier 2.(Wonder what's the significance of 6 there???)

Whilst the total credits for the I semester remains the same at 26, there have been some internal redistribution of credits. Engineering graphics has lost one credit from 5, now down to 4, which in a sense has been allotted to Physics and Chemistry Laboratory - I (which in the earlier regulation had no credits in the first semester) to keep the total credits steady for semester I. What it means to the students is that they will have separate university practical examinations for Physics and Chemistry Laboratory in semester I and again in semester II about which I'll discuss further down when I come to semester II. Hence, now there will be three laboratory courses in semester I itself, taking total no. of subjects in semester I to 9 from the earlier 8.

There are also some cosmetic changes in the name and order of the subjects; Fundamentals of Computing and Programming has now become simply Computer Programming and it has been raised above Engineering Graphics in the subject order getting the first number in the GE series. Computer Practice Laboratory does not have a ' - I' along with it, for which you'll see the reason in semester II's syllabus.

Now moving on to Semester II of Reg -2008 and Reg - 2013. Take a look below...

Now, the first thing you'll notice is that the number of credits required to be fulfilled in semester II of the new regulation is only 25 as against the 28 in the earlier regulation. This will lead us to dig deeper and one can easily notice that there is one laboratory course lesser in semester II of Reg - 2013. Computer Practice Laboratory II has been done away with. There's Physics and Chemistry Laboratory II in semester II wherein the students will be tested in the experiments learnt in semester II in the university practicals. Earlier, there used to be a combined exam at the end of semester II for all experiments learnt in first year.

There have been changes to the subject codes of Basic Electrical and Electronics Engineering, Engineering Mechanics, Computer Aided Drafting and Modelling Laboratory and Physics and Chemistry Laboratory. All their earlier respective department codes have been replaced with general engineering code GE. Here again, Basic Electrical and Electronics Engineering has been raised above Engineering Mechanics in the subject order getting the first number in the GE series. And lastly, there isn't any mention of the English Language Laboratory that was earlier an option for the colleges to offer for their students.

Guess that's about it!! If I have missed out on any changes in the new regulation, you're all free to point it out or air your views if you have any in the comments section.
Cheers!!!
